All events take place in the University Capitol Centre (located in Old Capitol Mall) in Iowa City, Iowa. The symposium will occupy a suite of rooms, the Conference Center, on the second floor of the building. All building and Conference Center entrances and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Parking is available in the Old Capitol Mall garage (parking fees apply).

Oakdale Prison Community Choir Welcoming Song

 

This song is performed at the start of each choir rehearsal and seeks to establish a sense of community, trust, and mutual purpose in participants. All are welcome to join in — lyrics are provided!

Welcome/Opening Remarks

 

Dr. Linda Snetselaar, Associate Provost of Outreach and Engagement in the Office of the Provost at the University of Iowa, will introduce the day's events and outline the purpose and goals of the Incarcerated in Iowa Symposium.

10:15 am

Address on Public Engagement

 

Associate Professor Carolyn Colvin, faculty member in the College of Education's Department of Teaching and Learning, will introduce and elucidate the significance of public engagement within the academy and other learning communities.

10:30 am

Address from the Department of Corrections

 

Director of the Iowa Department of Corrections John Baldwin will discuss Iowa prisons, prison programs, and the Iowa DOC's connection to the University of Iowa.

10:45 am - 

12:30 pm

Prison Projects

 

A panel of University of Iowa faculty, students, and community volunteers will give brief project overviews to demonstrate the broad array of volunteer programs in Iowa prisons.

 

Panelists will include:

    Educational practicum at Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville, IA

 

  • Mary Cohen (School of Music; Music Education)
    Oakdale Prison Community Choir at Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville, IA

 

  • Cliff Missen and Heather Erwin (WiderNet Project)
    WiderNet intra-prison internet system

 

  • Emily Guenther (Grinnell College Liberal Arts in Prison Program)
    Credit-bearing First Year of College Program at Newton Correctional Facility in Newton, IA

 

  • Mary Trachsel (Rhetoric)
    Writers' Workshop at Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville, IA

 

  • Kat Litchfield (Language, Literacy, and Culture)
    Book group facilitation and library advocacy at Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville, IA

 

  • Mark Fullenkamp (CLAS Director of Web Services) and Gemma Goodale-Sussen (English)
    Ft. Madison Prison Memory Project at Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison, IA

Lunch Break/Poster Browsing

 

Attendees can get lunch in downtown Iowa City. We will also use this time for informal poster presentations in the conference center lobby from public engagement groups on campus.

Each prison project coordinator will lead a break-out discussion with a small group of attendees. This is an opportunity for questions, creative dialogue, and brainstorming.
